At the 20th-anniversary event of University of Hyogo, Graduate School, School of Human Science and Environment. “Climate Change and the United Nations - Future Through SDGs -”, the SDGs Prize and SDGs Special Prize were awarded.

For the 20th-anniversary event hosted on Saturday, December 17, the newly established SDGs Prize and SDGs Special Prize were presented to selected university and high school students at the Human Science and Environment Forum held by the Graduate School, School of Human Science and Environment on Thursday, November 10.

This forum is a presentation event that is the most important event for the School of Human Science and Environment and School of Human Science and Environment, and this 19th hosting of the event was an opportunity for students and professors to announce their daily research and practical activities.

For the SDGs Prize, a third-year student of the School of Human Science and Environment, Nao Maeda, was selected with the theme “Current Installations of Green Infrastructure and Rain Gardens and Investigation of the Suitability of the Installation Locations of Rain Gardens in Kyoto City”. Student group SOGI Iro was selected with the theme of “Is it Taboo to Speak about Sexuality? - Implementation of SOGI Week for Spreading Gender Diversity Throughout the Campus -”.

Also, this event had a presentation from high school students at the junction of the Graduate School, School of Human Science. A student group called “Simheat”, from the Himeji Nishi High School, made a presentation under the theme of “The Effects of Ponds on the Phenomenon of Heat Islands”, and were awarded the SDGs Special Prize.

The event ended with the closing remarks of Vice President Makoto Kosaka: “Based on the approaches of SDGs, I would like students and professors to come together and make steady progress in achieving and adhering to the ‘Promise of 1.5℃’.

We have no business with pessimism of the future. I would like everyone to work together and make progress together.
As severe conditions continue into the future, I would like us to continue working together.” With those remarks, the event was concluded.

At the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference held in the United Kingdom in November 2021, a resolution was passed for the suppression of 1.5℃ of the increase in the average global temperature compared with before the industrial revolution, in order to avoid most of the effects of climate change, to be a practical goal of member states of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The campaign “Promise of 1.5 ?C. Act now to stop global warming.” is conducted with the goal to promote understanding of the “promise of 1.5℃” and for individuals and organizations to change their behavior. Members of the Japanese media who are passionate about SDGs and the United Nations Information Centre come together to talk about the meaning of the “goal of 1.5℃” and what should be done to achieve it.
